Just got an email, you know, that thing where people send notes/memos electronically instead of writing it on a piece of paper. It helps save the rain forest and trees and little bunnies from extinction. No, really, I am all for saving the planet and helping conserve resources. I have my own little piece of heaven where I do my best to let nature evolve at it’s own pace…. that is until the wife starts nagging me too much about mowing the yard. But that’s another story all together.
Hmm… now where was I? Oh yeah, got this email. Part of the email reads (some parts changed to “protect” the innocent)
Handouts for this event are available at: http://www.some.server.com/some_file.pdf. I'll have a few copies available in the meeting room, but encourage you to print them off yourself, to conserve paper.
UH? What?
I’m sure I just misread that, but the last time I looked up conserve it meant to “to use or manage (natural resources) wisely; preserve; save”. Now the thing that I’m trying to figure out is how does me printing out the this document vs the HR person printing out the document “conserve” paper. Last time I checked, it didn’t really matter who was doing the printing, one page takes up on page.
But, you know what really bothers me? It’s this meeting. It’s “changing gears”, helping us “cope” with the changing work environment where there’s been layoffs left and right while the President gets an $85,000 a year raise. And in a higher education environment where University Presidents, Provosts, and high ranking Deans are forgoing or even giving back raises to help their University. And then, there’s the fact that they are paying this consulting company who knows how much to come in to help us “cope” with the changes while laying off those that are employed here with the training to deal with this same exact situation. I’m sure it’s just me and I’m unwilling to “change gears” and accept the changes but it just doesn’t make alot of sense.
Excuse me while I join hands with myself and sing a round of Kumbaya… I’m sure that will make everything seem much better.
